Colophon

How this site is made.

A warm notebook of diagrams: an editorial page with working models inside it. No template, no site builder, no tracker.

The mark

A bifurcation diagram, drawn as a glyph: one simple rule, pushed, splitting into complexity and then chaos. Where the line begins, and one of the places it leads.

One colour

One blue, used everywhere — the work and the mind are the same lens, so they share the same accent rather than being colour-coded apart. Everything else is ink, paper, and hairlines: structure after Bauhaus, restraint after Agnes Martin, with the spirit of Hilma af Klint's diagrams of the invisible. A single warm neutral appears only inside the two-state models, where a second colour is needed to tell groups apart.

Type

  • Fraunces — display. An old-style serif with warmth and a little wonk.
  • Newsreader — body. Made for long reading on screens.
  • IBM Plex Mono — labels, captions, marginalia: the annotation layer.

All self-hosted; no fonts or anything else are fetched from third parties when you read this site.

The models

Every figure in the Field Guide and the writing is a real simulation or a real calculation, coded in plain canvas and SVG and running in your browser — boids, Ising, Kuramoto, Gray–Scott, the sandpile, the logistic map. Nothing is a looping video. The mark performs emergence rather than depicting it; that is the standard the rest of the site tries to keep.

Stack

Built with Astro as a fully static site: plain HTML, CSS, and a little vanilla JavaScript where a model needs to run. No analytics, no cookies.
